Besides the gas consumption, there are other things to consider when wanting to buy a scooter. There is the decision to have air filled tires or solid tires, the type of transmission, and the suspension.

There are also sit down scooters that are much more like motorcycles. These scooters are typically smaller and have smaller wheels, and a step through frame. However, they run on gasoline. c. The Controller Is Key: What is the controller? The controller is the “Brain” of your scooter. Think of the processor n a computer; the controller is the processor in your scooter and without this, the scooter will not work. Though you have no choice in what controller you get, you need to make sure that the controller will work with the motor and the battery setup of your scooter. Without compatibility between these systems, your scooter can blow fuses, surge the batteries, surge the motor, or even catch fire.

When gas prices were high around the $3.00 mark a lot of people were considering buying scooters to transport themselves to and from work or just to get around town. I know, to date gas prices have gone down significantly, but a lot of people are still worried that gas prices will go back up. Listening to the new, the Saudis’ are everything that they can to stabilize the prices and make them go back up. So, it may be a good idea to explore the purchase of the gas scooter if just for peace of mind if and when gas prices go back up.

In terms of the best choices when buying an gas scooter, well I have three choices for you. All are very reliable and are made by very respectable dealers.

My first choice would be a Honda scooter. Now, how can you go wrong with a Honda? From cars to motorcycle Honda has worked hard to put out a great product that last. As for scooters Honda has a full line of scooters that range from 49cc scooters to their top of the line 586cc scooters. The cheaper of the scooters will put you back $2000 or more dollars and the most expensive $8900 dollars. But I am sure you will be able to find a used Honda scooter with low cc's for much cheaper prices if these are out of your price range.

My second choice would be a Bajaj scooter. These scooters are lightweight with chassis that are easy to handle. Thinking about going green? Bajaj scooters produce very low emissions as a very high speed output of a minimum speed of 55 mph depending on the model that you purchase. On the low end these scooters will put you back in the price range of $1600 dollars and on the high end you could spend as much as $7000 dollars.

My last choice would be a Yamaha scooter. Don't take this as being the worse out of my three picks. Yamaha scooters are on the same line as Honda. Very reliable the will keep you on the road for years to come. Their new veno model which cost around $2000 dollars gets an estimated 110 mpg. Great gas mileage. This is a 49cc liquid air cooled 4 stroke scooter that looks a lot like the vespa scooters seen on most foreign films from Europe. If you want more power and want to blow out your budget then you can go top of the line with the Yamaha Majesty scooter. This scooter cost around $6100 dollars and gets 51 mpg. Not as many mpg as the veno but it has a lot more power.

Any of these are great scooters for the money and you will not make a bad choice with any one of them.

The first patents for scooters go back as far as 1921. The Razor scooter was later developed by Gino Tsai in Shanghai, Taiwan and became an instant hit with the public. It didn't take long for motor scooter popularity to expand all over the globe.

Even before 1950 there were as many as 110,000 scooters on the road in Italy alone. It has been just a little over 50 years since the Vespa-Douglas Corporation in the UK sold their first gas scooters. The Douglas corporation was on the verge of bankruptcy when they first began selling their gas scooters. It was a big hit at the 1950 Motorcycle Show and saved the company from possible financial ruin.

From 1950 to 1958 Vespa sold over 125,000 of their gas powered scooters in the UK. Why the great success? During this period the European countries didn't have a great deal of money and there was not much gas available to the public. Due to the scarcity of gasoline and the high gas mileage of the gas motor scooter it's popularity quickly escalated.

It didn't take long for the Italian models (the Piaggio from Vespa and the Lambretta from Innocenti) to branch out to other countries. In France they became so popular the French tried to get in on the boom by manufacturing their own. By the early to mid 1950s the sale of gas scooters climbed to about 1 million a year in France alone.

Other countries wanted to profit from the newest craze and tried to climb on the band wagon. While some were successful others were not. Germany began to manufacture larger touring models, but this did not satisfy the public in the way the smaller, cheaper and more fuel-efficient models from Italy and France did. These smaller models were extremely popular in the European market.

Tourist Scooters Manufacturers in Germany built some very strong and powerful versions and were the first to install electric starters. These larger versions were great for traveling, touring and even racing, but were not as popular as the smaller, cheaper, more efficient models used for traveling shorter distances around town.

Vespa began marketing a couple of very popular gas powered scooters from Piaggio, the GS 125cc and the GS 150cc. These were improved versions of the earlier models for several reasons. The biggest reason is probably because the heavy gear mechanism rods were replaced by smaller and lighter cables.

France's Roussey Scooters tried to one-up the Italian competition by coming out with a 175cc model. These were very nice vehicles and included the first water-cooled engines along with other new features, but because it had a pull-start it could not compete with the newer models from Italy that were already offering versions with electric starts.

As these wonderful vehicles have evolved over the years they have become increasingly more popular all over the world. Today they are everywhere. Why Buy a Gas Motor Scooter?

With thousands of scooters selling weekly, the surging popularity of today's models is hardly a secret. But if you are ready to put down money for a scooter, you'll first need to ask yourself, "Do I look at gas powered or electric models?"

We considered the points in favor of electric motor scooters in Part 1 of this series. (If you missed it, check my site.) Now let's glance at the advantages of gas powered scooters. You may have been high on electric scooters after scanning their selling points--but gas powered (and hybrid) scooters actually have plenty to offer. As you read this, you should ask yourself, "How do I see myself using the scooter?" Answering that question will lead you to the right choice. OK, here we go.

Gas powered motor scooters win points because...

:: They can travel many more miles without refueling. Even the best batteries will need to be recharged every couple hours (or 10-15 miles), while a 1-2 gallon tank on a gas powered model can take you as far as 200 miles.
:: Gas scooters are more cost effective where speed is concerned. In other words, you can drive faster while paying proportionally less. Gas powered models in the same price tier as electric models typically go 15-25 mph faster. And if you have your heart set on jetting down the freeway, you'll very likely need a gas powered (or hybrid) scooter.
:: Gas scooters offer greater versatility. With greater acceleration punch, speed, and power, gas models are the workhorses of the scooter world. They can carry more weight, drive further, and perform better on hills and rough ground.
:: Gas scooters are typically more durable, because they're designed to handle high speeds and are frequently capable of off-road use.
:: Refueling is as quick and easy as filling a 1-2 gallon tank. With an electric scooter, it's difficult to recharge a battery on the fly (curbside outlets, anyone?), and charging takes four to eight hours.
:: Gas powered scooters work well in all seasons, but battery power is decreased by extremes cold or heat.

Are you feeling more indecisive than when you started reading? Hopefully not--but if so, take heart. There is good news: both gas and electric motor scooters are produced by highly regarded manufacturers, both represent huge fuel savings over cars and trucks, and both are a great deal better for the environment. Your fuel savings won't be as high as they would be with an electric model, but getting, at minimum, 50 mpg on gasoline is nothing to roll your eyes at.
